Dennis Helfer (born in Donalda, Alberta) and Elaine Helfer (born in Donalda, Alberta), were his parents. The family's ancestry includes German, English. Swedish as well as Norwegian. She studied at William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler, Alberta. Three of her sisters Tammy, Tara and Trena resided and worked on their family's farm.
